I get this question a lot, from both new business owners and seasoned ones. When does it make sense to update brand photos?
Brand images are often the first thing people notice when they visit your website. They aren’t just pretty pictures – they are visual proof of who you are, what you do, and how you do it. People still want to see the person behind the business, and that means branding images that show you.

Why Branding Images Matter More Than You Think
Your branding images do a lot of heavy lifting for your business. They help you connect with website visitors, build trust, and communicate your personality before your prospects even read a word of your site copy!
Whether it’s your headshot, behind the scenes images, lifestyle shots, or the overall visual vibe you use across all your marketing, your brand photography should reflect where you are right this minute in your business.
Sometimes, though, I’ve seen that outdated brand images can send the wrong message. Your viewer may or may not consciously notice. But older brand photos can make a negative impact on the website visitor’s experience.
Seven signs It’s Time to Update Brand Photos
- You’ve rebranded your business. You’ve updated your logo, changed your brand colors, or made positive changes to your overall messaging or vibe. If your branding images reflect who you used to be, they aren’t going to be as effective as new ones.
- Your appearance has changed. Your hair is drastically different, or you’ve significantly gained or lost weight. Even brand new glasses could mean a disconnect when potential clients see you in person. Make sure your visuals spotlight your appearance as you are now.
- Your business is evolving. Offering a brand new product or service? Serving a different audience now? Growing into a more elevated version of your business? Your images should reflect where you are now, not where you were five years ago.
- Your current images feel outdated or overused. If you find yourself recycling the same three branding images over and over, it’s time for a refresh. Your audience wants to see variety. Bonus: new images might really jumpstart you to up your marketing game!
- You’re stepping into more visibility. Speaking engagements, podcast interviews, new marketing efforts require current, high quality photos. Having a fresh gallery of brand images makes it so much easier for you to say yes to opportunities.
- You’ve moved cities or changed your workspace. If you’ve gone from a home office to a coworking space, it might be time to update your image library. Your environment may be part of your story, and a fresh session can showcase it beautifully.
- You just don’t feel connected to your photos any more. Over time, you just outgrow your brand images. They may no longer match your energy or your increased level of confidence. Consider this a sign that your visuals need to catch up to your growth.
How Often Should You Update Brand Photos?
As a very general rule, entrepreneurs should consider updating their brand photos every few years. But as we’ve just discussed, there are other factors on timing of a new session.
I’ve had clients book a half day session with me when they start their business, and a few years later they’ve honed in on their services. At that point, they can consider a smaller brand session to focus on their new angle.

Take a look at your current brand images and ask yourself:
Do these images still look current and still look like me? Do they align with the direction my business is heading? Do the photos tell the story that I want to tell?
If the answer is “no” or even “I’m not really sure,” it might be time to consider a refresh.
